NORTH TEXAS (CBSNewsTexas.com) – When giving advice to future gardeners in North Texas, I first give them the three-growing-seasons overview: spring, summer, and fall. Each season requires different crops and techniques to ensure a successful garden. It's important to research which plants are best suited for each season and to plan accordingly.

Peppers are one of the few crops that can span all three seasons. They can be planted in the spring and will continue to produce until the first frost in the fall. However, it's important to note that peppers need a lot of sun and heat to thrive, so they should be planted in a location that receives at least six hours of direct sunlight each day.

Perhaps no plant you can grow more says “leave me alone” than the thorny versions of these desert champions. Cacti are a popular choice for those who want a low-maintenance garden. They require very little water and can thrive in hot, dry conditions. However, it's important to handle them with care as their spines can cause injury.

When planning your garden, it's important to consider the layout. You want to make sure that your plants have enough space to grow and that they are arranged in a way that allows for easy access. One popular layout is the raised bed. This involves creating a garden bed that is raised above ground level and filled with soil. This can help improve drainage and prevent soil compaction.

Another important aspect of gardening is soil preparation. Before planting, it's important to amend your soil with organic matter such as compost or manure. This will help improve soil structure and fertility. You should also test your soil to determine its pH level and nutrient content. This will help you choose the right plants and fertilizers for your garden.

Mulching is another important technique for a successful garden. Mulch helps regulate soil temperature, conserve moisture, and suppress weeds. It can also improve soil fertility as it breaks down over time. There are many different types of mulch available, including grass clippings, leaves, and wood chips.

Pest management is an important aspect of gardening. There are many different pests that can damage your plants, including insects, rodents, and deer. It's important to identify the pest and choose the appropriate control method. This can include everything from insecticidal soap to fencing.

Finally, it's important to harvest your crops at the right time. Different plants have different ripening times, so it's important to research when to expect a harvest. You should also harvest your crops regularly to encourage continued production.
