When it comes to starting your own garden from seed, one of the most important factors is the kind of soil mix you use. While you can buy pre-made seed starting mix from a local gardening supply store, you can also make your own seed starting mix at home. Doing so allows you to customize the soil to your garden’s needs, and it can also save money. Here's how to make your own seed starting mix.

First, you’ll need to gather your materials. You will need potting soil, vermiculite, and perlite. It’s important to use potting soil rather than regular garden soil, as potting soil is free from insects, pests, and weeds, and it will provide your seeds with the proper nutrients to germinate. Vermiculite and perlite are both soil amendments that help to improve drainage and aeration in the soil.

Next, you’ll need to mix your ingredients together. A good rule of thumb is to use two parts potting soil, one part vermiculite, and one part perlite. You can also add a few tablespoons of lime to the mix if your soil is acidic. Once you’ve mixed the ingredients together, you’ll want to moisten the mix. You don’t want it to be soggy, but you should be able to squeeze a handful and have it hold its shape.

Now you’re ready to fill your planting containers. While you can use any type of container, it’s best to use something that has good drainage. If you’re using a seed tray, make sure to use one with drainage holes in the bottom. Fill the container with your seed starting mix and make sure it’s packed down firmly.

Once you’ve filled your containers, it’s time to sow your seeds. Make sure the seeds are planted at the correct depth for the type of seed you’re planting. Some seeds need to be planted just under the surface, whereas others need to be planted deeper. Once the seeds are planted, lightly water them and make sure to keep the soil moist.

Finally, you’ll need to provide your newly planted seeds with the proper conditions to germinate. Make sure to place the containers in a warm, sunny spot, and provide additional light if necessary. You’ll also want to make sure the containers are covered with a plastic wrap or lid to keep the moisture in. Once the seeds have germinated, remove the cover and let your seedlings start to grow.

Making your own seed starting mix can be a great way to save money and customize your soil to your garden’s needs. With the right ingredients and a little bit of time, you’ll be able to create a soil mix that will help your seeds to germinate and grow into healthy plants.
